Sex Education

posted 2 years ago

I wasn’t taught sex education until my senior year in high school. I was 17 when I was a senior. Health class was a quarter long meaning it went from September to December and the same time frame for people who had it the second quarter. Sex education was taught 2 weeks out of the health class quarter and students were allowed to be opt out of it if their parents didn’t want them to be involved in it.

By the age of 17, I’m sure some of my classmates were already sexually active. I had this best friend in middle school named, Sam and when I become a freshman, she was a year younger than me, she got pregnant. She was 13 at the time and by the time I had graduated high school in 2007, she was on her third child and she had dropped out of high school. Each 3 children have a different father and she has no clue who the fathers are. She worked as a deli clerk for a short time before she was fired. Her parents are nice people and stuff, but her story is just proof that teens are having sex before 17. Look at the movie, Juno.

I also remember that for one week out of that quarter we had to take care of a fake baby. It was a balloon and we had to draw the face on with sharpie. How fucking realistic is that, right? At least it’s better than those TV shows where students have eggs or electronic dolls that cry. I’m sorry, but a balloon taught me nothing about parenting. I learned more being around my young cousins then some fucking balloon.

I think sex education needs to be taught as soon as 6th grade and should not be optional.

Opinions?
